POLYVAGAL THEORY (PVT): THE SCIENCE OF FEELING SAFE

PVT was developed by world-renowned researcher and Unyte’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory focuses on what is happening in the body and the nervous system, and explains how our sense of safety, danger or life-threat can impact our behavior.

Understanding Polyvagal Theory gives us a scientific framework that can be applied through physiological, or “bottom-up” therapies, to help change and improve how we feel, think and connect with others.

Our autonomic nervous system intervenes in every experience we have. When enough safety is detected our nervous system is open for connection; however when threat or danger is sensed it contracts and protects though action or immobilization.

LISTENING THERAPIES: SSP & RRP

Research into the impact of music on our nervous system has led to evidence-based listening therapies that promote neuroplastic and neurochemical changes in the brain and extended nervous system. These changes can enhance the growth of new neurons, functional shifts at the synapses between nerves enhancing communication between nerves, and a reorganization of how the embodied brain responds to stimuli within the body, in our relationships with others, and the environments within which we live.

Music-based therapies have been developed to promote neuroplastic changes that improve physiological functioning through the autonomic nervous system (ANS). These changes impact:

• Sensory perception through the eyes, mouth and skin
• Cardiovascular system through heart and lungs
• Gastrointestinal system through the stomach, bowels and bladder
• Reproductive system
• Immune system
• Hormonal regulatory system

The impact of increased regulation, neural and functional integration, along with enhanced resilience positively impacts physical and mental health across multiple dimensions.

I am a certified provider of two listening therapies: The Safe and Sound Protocol and the Rest and Restore Protocol.

THE SAFE AND SOUND PROTOCOL (SSP)

The SSP is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to engage the autonomic nervous system in ways that enhance access to the social engagement or ventral vagal state. As a practical application of Polyvagal Theory, the SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to re-tune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience. The SSP involves listening to specially filtered music through headphones alongside a provider, in-person or remotely.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS

The SSP offers a flexible delivery model with many potential benefits for individuals, couples, healthcare providers, and leaders. It is designed to increase response flexibility through increasing the capacity for the regulation of the autonomic nervous system.

Learn about the SSP: whatisthessp.com

BENEFITS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Increased sense of well-being and joy
  • Regulation of emotions
  • Improved well-being
  • Greater responsiveness and connection in relationships
  • More spontaneity, happiness, and energy
  • Greater ability to navigate transitions and change
  • Reduced sensitivity to noise
  • Increased resilience

THE SSP HAS APPLICATION WITH, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Individuals impacted by trauma, anxiety, depression, sensory processing difficulties, compulsive or troubling behaviours, and more.
  • Couples who are stuck in cycles of conflict and reactivity or who wish to enhance connection and intimacy.
  • Healthcare providers who are experiencing high workloads, workplace stress, and burnout.
  • Leaders who are committed to personal and professional development so that they can better lead and support others while optimizing organizational functioning and outcomes.

THE REST AND RESTORE PROTOCOL (RRP)

Whereas the SSP focuses on developing greater social engagement, reduction of sound sensitivities, and increases autonomic regulation, the RRP is used to support healing, restore homeostasis (physiological balance and stability) throughout the body particularly below the diaphragm (i.e. organs such as stomach, intestines and colon, spleen, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, adrenals, etc.).

This five-hour evidence-based listening protocol targets:

  • Chronic stress
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Gut and gastrointestinal functions
  • Challenges with mind-body connection

The RRP supports finding greater awareness of your body from within and increases the physiological capacity for self-regulation (i.e. emotions, thoughts, response to pain, etc.)

PRICING

Given it is essential that you are adequately supported through this process bundle choice will be a collaborative process and based on clinical need rather than price preference. This will be determined during the first session upon review of assessments, history taking, symptoms, social support plan, autonomic mapping, etc.

OPTION 1: SSP COMPREHENSIVE

Recommended for individuals with more complex concerns such as trauma, significant symptoms impacting functioning and regulation, etc.

Features complete SSP programs (Connect, Core, Balance) with therapeutic support that
include :

  • SSP activation and access fee (for duration of delivery)
  • Pre-assessment and Post-assessment administration, scoring, and feedback (written)
  • Autonomic Nervous System Mapping (done in session)
  • Flexible service delivery based on assessments and collaborative delivery plan depending on nervous system and clinical needs.

May include:

  • In-person or remote sessions for support and review as needed
  • Between session remote-delivery
  • Between session support (email/phone)

Typically completed within 4-6 weeks. However, time may be adjusted (i.e. process slowed down) depending on nervous system response.

Access to Balance protocol post-delivery is desired to support nervous system changes, activation of fee to access listening program of $50.00 will be charged monthly.

Some individuals find benefit to repeat full or partial (Core) protocol. Fees in addition to access fee to be determined depending on need, i.e. amount of ongoing support.

Cost: $1030.00

OPTION 2: RRP COMPREHENSIVE

Recommended for individuals who are struggling with gut and digestive issues, poor sleep, difficulties relaxing, stress etc. Also for those who wish to develop greater internal awareness (interoception) and support connection between mind and body.

Features access to full five hour program with regular therapeutic support throughout the process.

Includes:

  • RRP activation fee (for duration of delivery)
  • Pre-assessment and Post-assessment administration, scoring, and feedback (written)
  • Autonomic Nervous System Mapping (done in session)
  • Flexible service delivery based on assessments and collaborative delivery plan depending on nervous system and clinical needs.

May include:

  • In-person or remote sessions for support at review as needed
  • Between session remote-delivery
  • Between session support (email/phone)

Access to RRP post-delivery is desired to support nervous system changes, activation of fee to access listening program of $50.00 will be charged monthly.

Some individuals find benefit to continue with RRP through self-delivery. Activation fee of $50.00 per month will be charged.

Cost: $500.00

OPTION 3: SSP AND RRP PAY AS YOU GO

Hourly rate ($155.00) for clinical time spent.

Offers most flexibility providing more or less support as needed. Ideal for individuals who may not need weekly sessions or for those who need additional support than offered in Comprehensive options. Also, ideal for individuals who wish to be billed on weekly basis rather than lump sum, for example individual therapy sessions may be eligible for extended medical coverage.

Includes:

  • Weekly sessions
  • Assessment administration, scoring and report (provided to you)
  • Autonomic Nervous System Mapping
  • Any e-mail or phone contact between sessions (correspondence to provide feedback, extra support with nervous system supportive activities, etc.)
  • Weekly in person or remote one-hour sessions for duration of treatment: $155.00
  • Activation and access fee: SSP $100.00; RRP $50.00

Cost: $155.00 per 60 minutes. Invoiced weekly.
